This month we’re proud as Selby Contract Flooring reached a milestone. We have recycled 10,000m2 of carpet tiles, the equivalent to 11 football pitches in area! That doesn’t include our recycling of sheet carpet, vinyl, underlay and all the cardboard we put through our compactor. We’re members of the Carpet Recycling UK initiative, a not for profit membership association that works to increase the recycling of carpet waste across the UK.
Each year over 400,000 tonnes of carpet waste gets buried in a landfill, yet as carpet is made from natural and synthetic fibres, they still have value once the flooring is no longer wanted and transformed into sports surfaces and insulation. We’ll keep you posted on our progress as we recycle even more waste carpet – it’s all part of our service.
Half-term in the capital meant Selby Contract Flooring went back to school, as caretakers and facilities managers took the chance to clean or replace their flooring. We fitted carpet tiles in corridors and vinyl into classrooms, with carpet in those reading corners we all remember from our time in the classroom, sitting cross-legged as our teachers read us stories.
Look in many of those reading corners, and you’ll no doubt find copies of mega-successful children’s’ books, the Gruffalo and Room on the Broom. It’s a classic (my daughters love them) and another customer of ours from the last few weeks makes the film versions, Magic Light Pictures.
The flooding, of course, caught everybody’s attention and nearly caught us out when we went to Eel Pie Island to view the flooring of a Party Boat we have been asked to refurbish. Parking our car near to the bank of the Thames, we found that in less than an hour the river had broken its banks and water was lapping at the wheels! A lucky escape.
